New limb-darkening coefficients for PHOENIX/1D model atmospheres

Aims. The knowledge of how the specific intensity is distributed over the stellar disk is crucial for interpreting the light curves of extrasolar transiting planets, double-lined eclipsing binaries, and other astrophysical phenomena. To provide theoretical inputs for light curve modelling codes, we present new calculations of limb-darkening coefficients for the spherically symmetric phoenixmode...

Computing Limb Darkening Coefficients from Stellar Atmosphere Models

We explore the sensitivity of limb darkening coefficients computed from stellar atmosphere models to different least-squares fitting methods. We demonstrate that conventional methods are strongly biased to fitting the stellar limb. Our suggested method of fitting by minimizing the radially integrated squared residual yields improved fits with better flux conservation. The differences of the obt...

Asymmetries in Limb Darkening

The cause of the asymmetries in limb darkening reported by Neckel and Labs (1987) is discussed on the basis of new, stray-light-free observations, and found to be of instrumental origin.

The 10-Micron Limb Darkening of Venus

In June 1964, several diametric profiles of the 8to 14-/z flux from Venus were obtained with the 200-inch Hale telescope operated in the east-arm Cassegrainian mode. These data were recorded with a photometer system described previously [Westphal et al., 1963] as part of a surveillance program [Westphal et al., 1965]. Venus was near inferior conjunction and 52.2 sec of arc in apparent diameter,...

Wavelength dependency of the Solar limb darkening

A single parameter model of the mean Solar limbdarkening is presented. This empirical law has the advantage to represent the limb darkening over a large spectrum at least as well as a quadratic or logarithmic law. Since it is less sensitive than high degree polynomial laws, it is recommended for subsequent analysis of average limb-darkening variations and comparisons.
